But it's not contagious like the flu. You don't get fat just by contacting fat people.

Obesity isn't transmissible in the traditional medical sense, but it tends to carry over anyhow.

A big part of obesity is eating, exercise and social habits, and children tend to do as the parents do. If the parents have poor eating and exercise habits, the kids are likely to have too. If the family always socialize around huge meals, then the kids will do to.

If a parent tends to turn to food for comfort, then the kids are likely to do as well.

There is a bit of genetic disposition too, where some will fatten up easier than other. But the genetic contribution to obesity is quite small. Fat doesn't come from nowhere, it comes from what's being eaten. If you don't eat the excess calories, you don't get obese, no matter how much of a genetic disposition you have.
