According to the Catholic Church and, to a lesser extent, some Protestant Churches, original sin is a state resulting from the actions of Adam and Eve but washed away by baptism. It was St Augustine of Hippo who developed the concept of original sin, and it was never accepted bythe Orthodox Church or the Churches of the East.
The conditional acceptance by the Catholic Church of the science of evolution, will in future result in some tension with the concept of original sin, and may require some adaptation. Already, the Church appears to be moving in the direction of abandoning the concept of limbo, a place where unbaptised babies go, because they are still in a state of original sin.
Adam and Eve's sin was disobeying God's command not to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. This act of disobedience is commonly known as the original sin and is believed to be the reason for the fallen state of humanity.

original sin
Original sin as referred to in the Bible, and in sermons, is the disobedience of Adam to God when He told him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This was the first sin that man committed, which plunged all of mankind into a constant state of sin, until God sent His only Son, Jeshua (Jesus in English) to redeem all of mankind back from all sin. So the first sin and the original sin are the same.
