They may come from many situations such as rats go by the peanuts on the field, rats in a peanut butter factory, etc. FDA even allows some amount of rat hair in peanut butter and many other processed food. Believe it or not, rodents prefer seeds FAR more than they enjoy cheese like on the cartoons. Although, the best BAIT is usually a small spoonful of peanut butter. And, you can increase the likelihood of a rat hitting the bait if you put a piece of breakfast cereal like corn flakes on the peanut butter.

well first you have to know where the rats are coming from, once you figure that part out use a rat trap buy their home/hole/house you can put peanut butter in the trap (cheese does not work)

All rat killers are harmful. Try a large mouse trap or "rat trap with a spring" and put peanut butter on it. and be sure to keep the kids away. Poison will not work as well as a trap.
