Yellow pine is used to make pressure-treated wood for decking as well as for structural lumber an is considered to be a tougher pine. There are also spruce and fir used to make beams and posts. I t is cheaper by the board foot then the hardwood species and cheaper by far then woods like red cedar and redwood.
Select pine that is virtually knot free is most expensive , followed by premium and common grade.
