It depends on whether facilities exist in your area, and whether it is commercially viable.

Everyone recycles aluminum because it is a high value metal.

Food wrapping plastic on the other hand is flimsy and usually contaminated with food and so collecting it, cleaning it and melting it down is not always viable.

One way to get shot of it might be an Energy from Waste plant.

Just type in "Energy from Waste in to Wikipedia"

A large piece could block your digestive system and require surgical removal. Smaller pieces could be a little painful passing them back out, but shouldn't do much harm. It may also present a choking hazard. All in all, I wouldn't recommend it. If you accidentally swallow some and feel unwell, you should see a physician.

Plastics are organic molecules. Almost all molecules in living organisms are also organic, and heterotrophs (organisms that eat other organisms, like animals and many bacteria) gain energy and nutrients from food by digesting it, converting the molecules present in the food into other molecules that are useful to it.

In general, organisms do not possess the ability to digest plastics because the structure of plastics is fairly different from most naturally produced organic molecules. Plastic eating bacteria have evolved the ability to digest particular plastics the same way that they would digest, say, bread, or any other food substance: by breaking it down and reusing it. They are able to break chemical bonds in plastics that are not vulnerable to most species' digestive processes.

Though fairly little is known about plastic eating bacteria, they mostly seem to use the plastics as energy storage, similar to fat or glycogen in humans.

Plastic is not good if your like wrapping your self in it but it is good if you chew it in your mouth. Doctors recommended it for your chew and you could live longer from it!

No, plastics are not edible. The human digestive system will not digest plastics and the often contain substances that are harmful to human health.
