Let's get our nomenclature right here.

Alpha Centauri is a triple star system: Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are a fairly close double of stars roughly like the Sun, and Alpha Centauri C is a much dimmer red dwarf orbiting the pair at a considerably greater distance.

It just so happens that C's orbit brings it at times closer to the Sun than any other star that we currently know about. So Alpha Centauri C is sometimes itself called Proxima.

What constellation is alpha promixa in?

Alpha Centauri (binary system) and Proxima Centauri are in the southern constellation of Centaurus. They actually are a triple star system.

Virgo is the nearest star system to ours?

Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system. Its a binary star system of Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B. If someone asks you what is the nearest star ? then the answer will be "proxima centauri" in my opinion. nearest star: proxima centauri nearest star system: Alpha centauri A and B. Some people believe that its a triple star system of Prixma, Alpha A and Alpha B. centauri.

What star system is Alpha Proxima from?

Alpha Proxima is a term used in the Star Trek universe as, apparently, an alternative name for Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to our Solar System. The term "Alpha Proxima" is not used outside literature. Astronomers refer to the two stars of the binary star system closest to our Solar System as Alpha Centauri and Proxima Centauri. (The link below to Wikipedia talks about the star system. The other link (Proxima Centauri) refers to references within Star Trek.) The Alpha Centauri System is a triple star system with Alpha Centauri AB being a double Star directly gravitationally bound to each other. Proxima Centauri is a much smaller star further away but it is assumed they are gravitationally associated with each other. Perhaps they are refering to this Star when using the term Alpha Proxima.

Is Alpha Proxima the same star as Proxima Centauri?

To my understanding, the Alpha Centauri system contains two binary stars (Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B) and a third star Alpha Centauri C or Proxima Centauri (which is the closest star to our sun)

What is the fourth nearest star to our solar system?

Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun, at 4.2 LY. Curiously, even though it is the closest, it is not visible to the naked eye! Proxima Centauri is a tiny red dwarf star, and requires a fair-sized telescope to see. For a long time, many people thought that the closest star was Alpha Centauri, which isn't entirely incorrect. The Alpha Centauri system is actually a double star with a very distant triple; Alpha Centauri A (also known as Rigel Kent) and Alpha Centauri B form a binary system, and Proxima, Alpha Centauri C, is very distantly linked at about 0.3 LY.

How many light-years away from earth is beta centauri?

All three members of this 'triple-star' system ... Alpha Centauri, Beta Centauri, and Proxima Centauri ... are listed as being located roughly 4.2 light-years from our solar system.

What star is closest to your solar system?

Proxima Centauri, roughly 4.243 light years from our Solar System. Its a Red dwarf and is part of Alpha Centauri system which includes 3 stars. Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are about 4.37 light years away. and the planet Eris is red it is about 3 billion miles away from the Sun and it is 1 billion miles away from our Earth.Proxima Centauri4.2421 light years away

How far is the next star outside of the solar system?

The distance to the next star is about 4.2 light years away. It's called Proxima Centauri. (red dwarf in a triple star system with Alpha Centauri)

Alpha centauri is how much larger than sun?

Alpha Centauri is a binary, possibly triple, star system See related link for a pictorial.

What is the 3rd closest star on earth?

ANSWER:With the Sun being the first, Proxima Centauri is the next closest at 4.22 light years away in the Alpha Centauri star system. See the related link for more information.

How many years pass before light from Alpha Centauri reaches earth?

Alpha Centauri is a triple star system. Alpha Centauri A, B & C or Proxima Centauri. Alpha Centauri A & B are 4.37 light years from the Earth whereas Alpha Centauri C is 4.243 light years.

How many stars are there in the different solar systems?

The average solar system has only one star, although a significant minority have two stars orbiting each other in a "binary" star system. A small fraction of solar systems are composed of three stars, and more than that are probably extremely rare. The likelihood of a 4-star system being gravitationally stable over more than a few million years would seem to be small. In fact, the nearest star system to our own is a triple; two closely coupled stars and a small red dwarf quite distant from them. This is a Centarus system; Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are a binary, and Proxima Centauri is only about a third of a light year away. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf, and although it is the closest star to our Sun, is almost invisibly dim to the naked eye. Scientists believe that Proxima is part of the Alpha Centauri system, but they haven't had enough time to observe the behavior in relation to Alpha.
