It depends on the country... While it is immoral to sell virtual goods it's not necessarily illegal, however recently the Chinese government outlawed this making it illegal in china.
The reason behind this is that online games have created a new type of bully, the cyber bully... It is not uncommon for school kids too beat up other kids for virtual goods that they want in game, instead of robbing your dinner money they now rob your virtual gold.
It is however illegal to steal virtual goods, recently a man was imprisoned for stealing thousands of pounds worth of Habbo Hotel furnishings from online players.
Specifically, any sale of virtual goods (gold, characters, items) in World of Warcraft is forbidden by the Terms of Service, and can get you banned. Furthermore, since these are legally property of Blizzard Entertainment, you also run the risk of being charged with theft.
Blizzard Entertainment has also disallowed making advertisments for third parties, or selling goods from third parties in WoW, because they have made previous arrangements about in-game advertisments.
