"Explode" is a strong word. Glass can certainly break due to thermal shock, and if the glass is already stressed it may fracture with a certain amount of force, but it's generally more like a cap gun than like dynamite. A tightly sealed glass vessel could very well explode from the internal pressure buildup, particularly if the contents were partially liquid to start with ... but that has more to do with what's inside the glass than the glass itself.

No, glass is not a combustible metal. In fact, it is neither combustible nor a metal.

In material science, the world of different materials is usually broken up into four categories: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Glass is considered to be a subcategory of ceramic. One simple way to tell that glass is not a metal is that all metals conduct electricity, and glass does not.

Glass is also not combustible. When something combusts, it is combining with oxygen in the air. Most glasses are mostly made of silica, which is silicon combined with oxygen. Since the silicon in glass is already combined with oxygen, it can not possibly combust. Most of the other ingredients in glass are also combined with oxygen already, like alumina (Aluminum and Oxygen), magnesia (Magnesium and Oxygen) or lime (Calcium and Oxygen).

No. Glass consists mostly of oxides such as silica. Because the elements are in their highest oxidation states they will not react with oxygen.

There is only one element that produces compounds that wil 'burn' glass. The element is Flourine and the compounds capable of reacting with glass are:

Flourine gas F2

Hydrogen Flouride HF (Magic Acid)

Diflouride Peroxide FOOF (Satan's Kimchi)
