No...It is not illegal in Utah to ride in the back of a truck except on the freeway. Seatbelts are not required per Utah law for passengers sitting in areas which are primarily used to carry a load (obviously the bed of a truck is meant to carry a load). This law was to prevent people from riding on improper portions of a vehicle such as, fenders, hoods, etc. There are no age restrictions to ride in the back of a truck. Seatbelt laws only apply to people riding within a passenger compartment of a vehicle. I am a police officer in Utah.

Never has been. Born and raised here and there's never been a problem with it. Sure, there will be times people get hurt but that's also the case when they walk or ride in a vehicle.

This move to constantly limit freedoms get old in the name of safety.

Maybe all these people who want safety should put themselves in a bubble and stay right where they are, or go to jail where they'll just watch over you and you can have your safety, because those who trade their freedoms for safety deserve neither.

Use discretion when doing anything that could cause injury and you'll be fine. Life is full of dangers, so use your own discretion and make a choice.

Freedom is not the issue here, just very soft people.
