At the very least, that would be understating it.

God created "marriage" between a man and a woman for the main purpose of procreation and a stable environment for the rearing of children in the knowledge and wisdom of God [ideally].

"...God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply..." (Gen.1:28).

"...Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Gen.2:24)

Like everything else God has created... sex, too, has been polluted and/or perverted by man, and has been extant in the world since the beginning.

"And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Gen.6:5)

It would be interesting to know if "gay marriage" was a major concern to the folks of ancient Sodom, like it seems to be in this society of these last days.

We're told that "two angels" went to Sodom to assess the "cry of Sodom and Gomorrah"... because: "...their sin is very grievous..." (Gen.18:20] -- to: "...see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it..." (Gen.18:21).

The Bible reveals that most of the time, angels "appear" as men on earth... which we are told was the case with the two angels who visited Sodom.

"...there came two angels to Sodom..." (Gen.19:1)

They first met Lot... and were quickly invited to his house. But, before long... the men of Sodom surrounded Lot's house and demanded of him:

"...Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them." (Gen.19:5)

The NIV says it this way: "...'Where are the menwho came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.'"

On the surface, it would seem that if the men of Sodom were "married" to one another... they were very loose marriages... in that, the whole town was fully into "group sex. You would think that "married homosexuals" would "forsake all others" and be very protective of their relationships. But, according to the biblical account... the possibility of "hurt feelings" of "jealous lovers" was a non-issue in Sodom [if they were married].

It's doubtful that "gay marriage" was the social issue with the free-wheelers of Sodom, that it is with today's high-tech society. They apparently just had sex whenever, wherever... and with whom or whatever they chose.

Yet... the "outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah" [Gen.18:20 NIV] was very grievous in the sight of God. The "perversion" of sex, which God made in the beginning, was more than enough to "disgust" Him. That, alone, is "spitting in God's eye."

The added notion of any kind of "marriage arrangement" in conjunction with this perversion [with marriage designed by God for the procreation and rearing of the fruit of the parents' {male and female} bodies]... is so unthinkable with God, that He cannot dignify it by addressing such an abomination.

But, man has been spitting in God's eye from the beginning. The thoughts and intents of man's heart has been evil continually. This is nothing new.

God has made known His view... and has given His Commandments for man to obey. He never gave man the right to "decide what is right or wrong." He told man what's right -- and man has only to decide whether or not he will obey.

This applies also to "marriage," which God made.

And God has also told man that "Judgment Day" [the Last Great Day] is coming -- to "reward every man, according to his works" that he has done in his life.

"Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy. Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done." (Rev.22:11-12 NIV)

And God has told man the Judgment that shall come down upon those who insist on sexual perversion:

"...Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of Eternal fire." (Jude 1:7 NIV)

And that doesn't even touch on the unthinkably wicked notion of "gay marriage" that God's Word refuses to even discuss.

Is gay marriage spitting in God's eye?

No... the "usual sins" [stealing, lying, murder, adultery, idolatry, etc.] is spitting in God's eye. Gay marriage is beyond "normal sin"... beyond perverse. It's spitting in God's eye... then, rubbing it in.

No. God does not have an eye that mankind can spit in. Neither is living your life, falling in love and entering into a committed loving relationship in accordance with your sexual orientation to be compared to spitting.

Though the biblical God tells us we are made in His image and likeness and that He does have eyes, He lives in His spiritual heaven and no one has seen Him - only the Word aka His Son, Jesus. So to be able to actually spit in His eye is not doable. However, the idiom you are probably referring to is defined: spit in the eye or face of in English: Show contempt or scorn for.

When one reads the Scripture, they soon discover God has a great desire for all mankind to follow His perfect ways. Why, because His intentions are for us to become part of His perfect family (see 2 Corinthians 6:18 and Hebrews 2:10)). He is reaching out to all mankind to turn away from sin and repent so He can 'beget' us into His family (Acts 2:38 and 3:19). But that choice is each persons to make or not.

As God defines marriage as a covenant between a man and a woman only (see Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4-6), any deviation from that God calls an 'abomination' in His eyes (see Leviticus 18:22). In fact Leviticus lists all wrongful acts of humans that He calls abominations and later warns that none committing these without repenting will enter into Eternal Salvation (see Revelation 21:27). Once again the choice is each and everyone of ours to make.

So yes, same sex marriage is showing contempt or scorn of the Law of God and is idiomatic of spitting in the eyes of God.

I have not always agreed with gay marriage, but I am sure a loving God would not so misunderstand the intentions of participants as to think they were 'spitting in his eye'.
