One can find Serato Scratch Live at their main website. Once on the website, users can mix and scratch digital music from the comfort of their own home.

No Serato Scratch does not change the bit rate. Serato is simply an engine for playing your existing MP3's
Rusko uses Ableton Live for beat creation and Serato Scratch for live DJ work.

Most software for DJ are given for fee because they usually need a controller or interface to work 100%. There are 2 software that I suggest you checkout. 1.) Rane Serato Scratch Live, I think you can download it free. You also would need the SL2 interface for it to work 100%. 2.) Virtual DJ LE, you can download it free. As like the Serato Scratch Live, you will need a controller for this to work 100%.
Serato is responsible for the preservation of direct drive turntables. Without Serato, I would have had to update to CD-J format, which is much more expensive.

Yes it is i am using this setup for my own setup which consists of a djm 700 and 2 cdj 400's. you can either use the cdj through the usb as a control usb interface or you can use the cdjs using the control discs which are generic and can be used in all CD players. I do recommend using the cdj 400s with serato they seem to work very well together and complement each other
