I think The Sims is good for 12 years old. It is develops the social thinking. I think the games are good for childerens (maybe because I´m developer :D). Kids can live trought lot of simulations od real life.
It really depends on the kid. The game has woohoo (sex for sims), and you can't see what they do, but the action is there. Sims fight, drink, cheat, die, whatever. Sims can be gay. So, depends on the child, and the parents.
