I'm not sure about other societies, but we as Americans value superficial things. Everywhere we look, we are being bombarded with advertisements that glamorize a rich and decadent lifestyle. Magazines show us how we are expected to look. It seems as if it is almost a crime to age, have cellulite, or gain a few pounds. We are constantly being manipulated by the media and fashion industry to strive towards an ideal that doesn't even exist. Americans also have low impulse control (another characteristic of Narcissism). We want what we want and we feel we deserve it now. We see commercials for fast food and then a commercial for a rapid weight loss supplement. We are made to feel that we need Liposuction or botox or a nose job.Nothing in our society encourages self reflection or denial of our cravings or impulses. We ignore the deeper aspects of our life because we are so worried about getting the new car, losing 20 pounds, looking better and making more money than the next person. It is no wonder that most of us never find true happiness or love.
