Unless purchased in a duty free shop, Southern Comfort is a blend of rectified alcohol (highly concentrated ethanol) with fruit, spice and whiskey flavorings.

The version in duty free shops is a blend of Southern Comfort and Bourbon.

Southern Comfort is typically considered a bourbon, even though it technically by composition is not.
