Bourbon

Bourbon is an American whiskey made from at least 51% corn. Although the origin of Bourbon is debated, it probably came from settlers of Old Bourbon in modern-day Eastern Kentucky. Today, most brands of Bourbon are still produced in Kentucky.

What is a bourbon whiskey that is not from Kentucky?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Bourbon is a "protected designation" ... in order for a liquor to legally call itself bourbon, it must be produced according to certain specifications. One of these is that it be made in the United States ... anywhere in the United States, not just Kentucky.

However, bourbon is so strongly associated with Kentucky that probably 95% of the bourbon produced comes from there; most distilleries outside that state call their produce "whiskey" instead, even if it's made in exactly the prescribed manner for making bourbon.

An example would be Jack Daniel's, which would legally be entitled be called "bourbon" if the Jack Daniel company didn't prefer the designation "Tennessee Whiskey" instead.

Jack Daniel does charcoal filter their spirits, and most bourbon makers do not... the definition of bourbon neither requires nor prohibits this, and a few products sold as bourbon arecharcoal filtered.

The term "bourbon" was named in specific places around the US, most notably Bourbon Street in New Orleans, although the term "bourbon whiskey" may have been derived from any of these places.

What is difference between whiskey and bourbon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A brandy is made from fruit whereas a whiskey is made from grain.

Brandy can only be made from distilled wine not just any fruit.

Brandy is made by distilling any fermented fruit juice. Grapes, Oranges, apricot, etc. may all be fermented, and then distilled to make brandy. American fruit brandy's are only artificialy flavored syrups, which should not even be cosidered brandy but a liquer. Whiskey is distilled from fermented grains.

How many carbs in Elijah Craig bourbon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are no carbs in burbon, it is the mixers you have to watch. However, there is scientific studies that prove the over 2 ozs per day (man) or 1 oz per day (woman) can slow/retard weight loss. If you're on low-carb diet, don't drink it until you get past 3-4 weeks on that eating plan, then limit to 1-2 drinks with non-sugar mixer, 1-2 times per week... Hope that helps...
