There are potassium ions that are present in the guard cells of stomata openings. If you soak a leaf in water, the stomata will open due to the water flowing inside the stomata and into the guard cells due to the potassium ions in the guard cells (this is caused by the properties of osmosis).

If you soak a leaf in salt water, the stomata guard cells will close. This is because the present potassium in the guard cells is not as concentrated as the salt water, therefore due to osmosis, water will try to flow out of the leaf through the stomata. This will cause the water pressure in the guard cells to drop, and directly causing the stomata openings to close.

When stomata are in a saline solution they close up. This is to keep the leaf from losing too much water.
