yes

I would say NO. Synthetic drugs are, well, synthesized That is, the final drug is a result of a recipe of chemical reactions to produce a final molecular structure.

Opium is not synthesized. It is a powder product extracted from (not synthesized from) a plant (the opium poppy). People were using opium in Asia years before we had much knowledge of chemical processes.

Actually, opium is not so much "a drug" as "a drug mixture". Still, all the chemicals therein are made by nature without further synthesis by man. In fact, Opium contains a number of chemicals that have biological effects, but the main two products are morphine and codeine - these are the only two useful naturally occurring opioids. No further synthesis is needed, these chemicals are in their final form.

By the way, don't assume that "natural is good" and "synthetic is bad". In fact, many synthetic opioids are more effective and have fewer side effects that their "Natural ancestors".

All opiates come from the poppy which contains morphine and codiene. Depending on which opiate you are talking about they are all different. Theres: Raw opium which you can extract morphine and/or codiene from. Morphine Codeine Hydrocdone (hydrogenated codeine 4X stronger than codeine Oxycodone (oxygenated codeine 8X stronger than codeine Hydromorphone (hydrogenated morphine 4X stronger than morphine) Oxymorphone (oxygenated morphine 8X stronger than morphine) Diacetylmorphine (Acetylated morphine aka heroin) There are several other drugs made in labs that are derived from the poppy. Each one goes through different chemical processes to create specific results. Such as Fentanyl, Subutex, Methadone etc. But any real opiate comes from the same source. Our government has tons of poppy fields for this purpose.

No, not all narcotics are made from opium; some are synthetic. Here is a relevant quote that I looked up for you: Synthetic opioids these drugs are completely man made and are not chemically related to opiates. Examples include methadone, fentanyl, dextropropoxyphene, tramadol, and pethidine (called meperidine in US). Synthetic opioids will NOT be detected in a test for opiates.

What are examples of narcotics?

Narcotics are drugs that alleviate physical pain, suppress coughing, alleviate diarrhea, and induce anesthesia. Natural narcotics are derived from the Opium poppy and synthetic narcotics are made to act like the major constituents of Opium (thebaine, morphine, codeine). Legal, synthetic narcotics such as OxyContin (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone) are prescribed as pain-relievers but are often diverted for illegitimate uses. Heroin is an illegal narcotic, derived from morphine.

What are narcotic medications?

Narcotics are opium derivatives and synthetic compounds that mimic the effects of opium derived drugs, such as Demerol (meperidine) and Methadone (dolphine).

What is a quasi-narcotic?

Quasi-synthetic narcotics are those which are derived from naturally occurring narcotic substances but are changed in the laboratory to have a more specific effect or to be more powerful. eg Heroin from Morphine. These are distinct from narcotics synthesised in the laboratory to produce a specific chemical effect in the body and not derived from a natural narcotic (such as Methadone)
