As of 2011, the New Orleans local government changed its view on marijuana to make way for law enforcement to focus on more serious crime. Local New Orleans government made possession of small amounts of marijuana a municipal offense rather than a criminal offense. Instead of receiving a minimum incarceration sentence, it is a $500 fine or up to 6 months in prison. The unique part of the change it is not mandatory for the police to arrest or fine you upon discovering possession. This is talking about local government of course. In the eyes of the state and the federal governments, marijuana possession is still illegal and considered a criminal offense. So steer clear of sheriffs and the DEA.
