Does a computer shut down perform the same functions as a restart?

No. A "shutdown" usually powers the computer off or halts the processor operation, but performs no further action. A "restart" first shuts down the operating system and may temporarily power off the computer, but will then turn it back on again starting with the BIOS POST procedure.

How do you restart your computer?

When you press on the power button (or shut down through an OS) it begins by saving all used data and dumping all RAM (Random Access Memory). This, in turn shuts down the OS and finally the circuitry cuts off power to the motherboard, but not completely, the final click is when capacitors are discharged at the end. The operating system may intercept an ACPI button event from you pressing the power or sleep button. The OS may also initiate a restart from Start/Shutdown/Restart (Windows) or init 6 / reboot or shutdown command (*NIX). Once the restart sequence is initiated, the OS may instruct all running programs that a shutdown is in progress. These programs/services in turn will initiate their shutdown process to save data and unload from memory safely. The OS will eventually KILL programs or services that do not support or respond to a shutdown event. The OS will send a command to the ATX power supply (only ATX supports soft powerdown) if shutting down. Otherwise, the OS will simply issue a command to the CPU to warm boot. BIOS then takes over the boot process, loads first 512 bytes of detected boot device, jumps to boot loader code and you are back up and running. In the case of problematic restarts, these may be due to malfunctioning hardware on the bus (add-on cards) or misbehaving drivers. Safe mode or single user boot will rule out most drivers. Failing that, yank non-critical add-on peripherals. The computer can be restarted by selecting start and than shut down, then restart. Also, it may be turned off by holding down the turn on button, but that is EXTREMELY UNRECOMMENDED if your computer holds anything important at all. By doing it that way your computer is susceptible to losing data due to improper shutdown. Use it for emergencies only. There is a fast and good way to restart your computer: Go to Task Manager => Shutdown Menu => Hold Ctrl key and select Restart or shutdown. Your computer will be restarted or turned off in 3 Seconds!

How do you reboot laptop?

The same as with desktop computers. If you have windows: click on start (in the left-bottom of the screen) and click on (the little arrow next to, if you have windows 7) shut down. You'll get a menu, asking if you want to save energy, restart or shut down. Click on restart. If you have OSX (macbook): click on the little apple icon in the left-top of the screen and click on restart. Hope this helped!

When your computer is in MS-DOS mode how would you put it back into DOS mode?

Both are same..AnswerQuit MS-DOS (alt+F4) to get back to windows. Then go to Start -> Shutdown -> Restart in DOS mode. The computer will restart DOS but won't start windows. When you want to start windows again, just type win. ANSWER:MS-DOS and DOS are the same program: MicroSoft Disk Operating System. If your computer is in DOS mode, type WIN to start up windows. However, if you are already in Windows, then you are actually in the DOS prompt (also called the command prompt) which is a simulated DOS environment run by Windows. In this case, just type EXIT to return to Windows. If you are trying to get your computer into DOS mode, and you have either Windows 95 or 98, go to Start --> Shutdown, and select the option that says "Restart in MS-DOS mode". If you have any version of windows after 95 or 98, then go to Start --> Run, and type in Command to get into the command prompt.

How do shutdown lan connected computer through their ip address?

If you are the legitimate administrator of the (Windows) computer in question, you can do this using the Computer Management tool. If you are not, this is illegal (and the odds are you won't be able to anyway).
