If we didn't have leap year day, over a long period of time if years always had 365 days, our calendar would get out of sync and that will be bad. However, every so often (because an astronomical year as slightly less that 365.25 days), we need to cancel leap year days in every year ending in 00 with the exception of years divisible by 400 (such as 2000).
