Well, it does not do as much as tablets. No video, games or colour. But just for reading, it's perfect.
The kindle fire HD is good for rreading and amazon apps. But for the price I would just get an android tablet and download the kindle reading app.

A Kindle is solely for the reading of books, newspapers, and other reading materials. It only has access to the amazon book store. A tablet has access to the entire internet and has applications installed on it. A tablet can have the Kindle app installed on it so that it acts as a Kindle.

The Kindle DX has a larger screen than the Kindle (9,7" as opposed to only 6" for the normal Kindle) and is much better suited for reading PDF files, textbooks, newspapers etc.
