I wouldn't rank them as a great first time dog, no. Borzoi, being sighthounds, have a specific set of requirements and compromises and being very large dogs with little trainability, they can quickly turn your life upside down if you are not experienced with training a dog to have good house manners and how to be a well behaved citizen when out and about.
