Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, whereas Mt. Everest is the highest in the world. The difference being that Mauna Kea has a greater overall height from sea floor to peak, but Mt. Everest has the highest point above sea level. Most of Mauna Kea is underwater, whereas all of Mt. Everest is above sea level.
