South Island.
New Zealand is made up of two main islands, the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Maui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu. Though larger than the North Island, the South Island is much less populous.

The north island, the south island are the main islands. There is also Stewart Island at the very bottom of the south island. Unlike the north & south island, Steward Island is officially named. Currently there is no official name for either the north or south island (although this is currently being changed). Additionally there are some island provinces of New Zealand such as the Cook Islands, but they are not considered the chief islands.
No there are many smaller islands. The South Island is the twelfth largest island in the world and the North Island is fourteenth largest.
