As at 2009, the current prophet of the 'Mormon' church - the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is President Thomas S. Monson. However, the founder and first prophet of Mormonism was Joseph Smith. He claimed that when he was only 14, in 1820, he entered the local woods to pray and ask God which Church was right and which should he join. An evil spirit quickly bound histongue, however, that he could not speak. I was "seized upon by some dark power which entirely overcame me ... I could not speak ... thick darkness gathered around me". After exerting all his strength, he was able to call upon God for release. Suddenly a pillar of light descended, shining directly overhead with a power above the brightness of the sun, immediately freeing him from the oppressive darkness and evil which held him bound. He saw within it "2 personages whose brightness and glory defy all description". One of them called him by name, and identified the other as his Beloved Son.
He was told not to join any of the churches, as all had departed from the true ways and the Gospel ordinances Jesus had laid down for His Church. He was told that if he remained faithful, the Lord would have a great work for him to do in bringing the true Church back to earth.
On 21st September 1823, he received 3 visits from the angel Moroni, who told him he would be a most significant person in the Lord's work. He subsequently received gold plates from this messenger, which he translated as the Book of Mormon. Since the gold plates had to be returned to the angel in heaven, we have no earthly evidence of their existence. A number of other heavenly visits occurred over the ensuing years - all as the Kingdom of God was gradually restored piece by piece to the earth again, all in preparation for the Lord's Imminent Second Coming in the Last Days. Thus Latter-day saintsbelieve that these prophets now, of the Latter days, are all equivalent in power and authority to biblical prophets of old.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that they are practicing the original religion found in the Old and New Testaments. Therefore, they believe that the original prophet of their religion was Adam, as found in Genesis.
They believe that after the death of Jesus Christ and the New Testament Apostles, this true religion and the authority to preach it were lost from the earth, but that Jesus Christ restored it to Joseph Smith, the first prophet of modern times.
The first modern prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was Joseph Smith, Jr. As Church membrers believe in the Biblical prophets as well, many would say the first prophet was Adam.

I assume you are asking, "Does the Mormon church have a prophet?" If so, the answer is yes. There has been a living prophet on the Earth previously, and there is one today. The current prophet is Thomas S. Monson. Just as there were living prophets in days before, the living prophet has the power and authority to speak for God.
The current prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Thomas S. Monson. He is the 16th president of the Church.

If you asked this question of a group of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) you would probably get two answers.
The first answer would be Adam, as in Adam and Eve. Mormons believe that their church is a continuation of the true Biblical religion, and therefore, Adam was the first prophet.
The second answer would be Joseph Smith, Jr. Joseph Smith, Jr. is believed to have restored the doctrine and authority found in the Bible to re-establish the true Church of God today.
Adam was the first prophet of the first dispensation, and Joseph Smith was the first prophet of this, the last dispensation.
The founder and first prophet of Mormonism was Joseph Smith.
He claimed that when he was only 14 he entered some woods to pray and became engaged with evil, "seized upon by some dark power which entirely overcame me ... I could not speak ... thick darkness gathered around me". A pillar of light, shining like the sun, descended and freed him from the oppressive darkness. He saw 2 figures, identical in appearance until one identified the other as his Beloved Son.
On 21st September 1823, he received 3 visits from the angel Moroni (this angel is only mentioned by the Mormon Church), who told him he would be a most significant person. He subsequently received gold plates from which he translated the Book of Mormon. Since the gold plates had to be returned to heaven, we have no direct evidence of their existence.
He also claimed that Jesus appeared to him in 1836 at the Kirtland Temple, forgave him his sins and validated the building as a place of blessing.
This can be answered in two ways: Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) believe that they are a continuation of the same faith that was practiced anciently, beginning with Adam and Eve. If asked "Who was the first prophet?", many Mormons would answer Adam. Indeed, a popular Mormon children's song starts with the line "Adam was a prophet, first one that we know." Mormons believe that God (almost) always has a prophet on the earth to communicate His will to His children - this pattern started with Adam and continues to the present day.
If you changed the wording of the question slightly, and said something like "Who was the first prophet of the church?", Mormons would answer Joseph Smith, Jr. Joseph Smith is considered the first prophet of the church in modern times. Mormons believe that through him, God restored the ancient Christian faith which had been lost for centuries.
The current president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Thomas S. Monson. You can read more about him at the "Related Links" below.
Thomas S. Monson
The Prophet of the LDS Church is the prophet, seer and revelation who provides divinely inspired messages to the church and world.Twice a year the LDS Church holds a "General Conference" where the church members and the whole world may hear and be edified by the Prophet of the Church, as well as the rest of the Church leadership including the 12 apostles, members of the Seventy and the General Relief Society. The conference is broadcast through out the world in many different languages. The Prophet has taught many things.Specifically there is one talk from the now Prophet, Thomas S. Monson about not judging others. There are many others that are available in books.
And LDS prophet earns no income from the church. The LDS church utilizes a complete lay clergy where all leadership is voluntary. The same for Bishops, Stake Presidents, Mission Presidents, and all other authorities.
I don't know why you asked that question. "LDS" means "Latter Day Saints" and refers to anyone who is a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or LDS church. That is pretty self explanatory. So the LDS were ALWAYS allowed in the LDS church because the LDS church is made up of only LDS people. Duh.
The Prophet Russel M Nelson has asked that members be referred to as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Emery LDS Church was created in 1900.
