Rationalism is the view that some truths about reality are knowable in a way that is in some degree independent of experience - some synthetic truths may be known a priori. Empiricism is the view that truths about the real world are derived from observation.
Even in the gospels, which are written as narratives of supposed events, much is consistent with rationalism. In the gospels, we are asked to believe some things that are said to have been observed, but many events were described although not observed, while much of the material is in the form of parables or lectures and not based on actual experience. When we look at the inconsistencies in supposedly a posteriori material among the different gospels, we should then realise that even this is not really based on actual experience, reinforcing the view that the gospels are rationalistic.
This is also almost entirely true of the New Testament epistles.
