It's a fun metaphor, but it is not very descriptive of reality. What we call the north pole is just the earth's one axis as it exits the earth to the north, usually through the ice during the northern hemisphere's winter. The time is coming within the next few decades when the north pole will be just a location in the middle of the Arctic Ocean and will never or rarely be covered by ice. The south pole is the same axis as it exits the earth to the south. The south pole comes out on the continent of Antarctica.
