All death penalty cases have built-in mandatory appeals. Peterson is going through the appeals right now and depending on the outcome may be assigned a DOE (date of execution) or he may get a new trial (rare) or a reduction to life without parole.
The Sixth Amendment guarantees the accused a speedy and public trial with an impartial jury of the suspect's peers. On the request of the defense the judge ordered a change of venue to insure impartiality, he had competent councel, the best his parents could afford, which put on a vigorous defense, and as for the speedy trial, his was about a fast as any other defendent and backed-up court calenders.
This should not be confused with new and additional evidense. There have been no revelations in the case, no surprise confessions as is seen on TV. Peterson was judged by a jury of his peers after they heard the evidense of both prosecution and defense. The jury got it right and I'm confident their verdict will withstand the appeals process.
