Is the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew the same as the Sermon on the Plain in Luke?

The answer can simply be found in the use of the priginal word used which means 'level place'. Naturally, you can have a level place on a mountain. Certainly both Matthew and Luke were writing from eyewitness accounts of the event. In addition, it is entirely possible that the sermon could have been repeated on more than one occasion.

∙ 8y agoMatthew's Sermon on the Mount and Luke's Sermon on the Plain are both sourced from material in the hypothetical 'Q' document, so to that extent they are both the same. Since Q was a book of sayings attributed to Jesus, but did not give the context in which Jesus might have spoken those sayings, the two evangelists had to create their own context.
Matthew decided to have Jesus give a lengthy sermon on the mountain, containing much of the material he took from Q. On the other hand, Luke chose to have Jesus give a shorter sermon on the plain and to place some of the 'Q' material elsewhere in his Gospel.
