In general, they usually dedicate their writings to a loved one. Like their wife/husband, kids, or people that have greatly influenced them throughout their life. Also maybe someone that has helped them a lot with the book they wrote. Then when they pick a person, they sometimes use inside jokes in the dedication, or for a wife, "for my one and only love, Olga". something along those lines, usually. They don't really just put a name of a person, but rather say what they think about that person or why they love them so much, why they inspired them, and so forth. That is mostly what I have noticed... I read the dedications in each book I read =).
The book is dedicated to someone special, typically mentioned at the beginning or end of the book as a way to express gratitude or appreciation.
Dedicate your book to anyone that you feel helped you in any way.
An author might dedicate a book to a partner, to children, to a parent, to a higher power, to an editor, to a friend - to anyone at all!
Huh My life is but a weaving
Beteeen my Lord and me.
I cannot choose the colours,
He worketh steadily.
Sometimes He weaveth sorrow,
And I, in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper,
And I the underside.
The dark threads are as needful In the Weaver’s skilful Hans,
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
