Yes, a cello is larger than a viola. So much so that it is held vertically and played while sitting down whereas a viola is held as a violin.
"As the viola is tuned a fifth below that of the violin and that the fifth indicates a vibratory ratio of 3:2, it has been reasoned that an instrument built in proper proportion should have a body length in a proportion of 3:2 to that of the violin. This would result in a viola with a body length of 54 cm. (21 in.), which for my part is not an acceptable goal... 'The viola of from 16½ to 17 inches is ideal from all viewpoints.'"
Since Stradivarius' last cellos, the length of the cello body has been around 29.7 inches. (the De Munck being length of 29.2)
The viola is both larger than the violin and smaller than the cello.
In the violin family, the next in pitch above the cello is the viola. The cello is the bass of the violin family. The violin itself is the soprano, and the alto is the viola. There have been tenors made of this family from time to time, but they are not in any way standard instruments and are usually called by the name tenor violin.
Cello is lower in pitch by one octave. It is also much bigger.
Most commonly the viola
The 'cello is larger than the viola, which is larger than the violin.
The only strings instruments that are larger in size than the cello are the double bass and the harp.
A cello can play in the range of a violin (much of it), if that's what you mean, but a violin's highest note is much higher than a cello's highest note.
Cello is bigger and played sitting between the musician's legs, viola is smaller and played underneath the musician's chin. They both have the same open-string notes, C, G, D, A from lowest to highest. eat my pooooo, you stole fizzy lifting drinks, you lose! good day sir
The Cello, whose standard size is about 47 in (119cm) including the neck is the largest.
The viola is the instrument slightly lower than the violin. Its strings (from lowest to highest) are C, G, D and A, whereas the strings on a violin (also from lowest to highest) are G, D, A and E. String instruments from highest to lowest are: Violin Viola Cello Double Bass
A viola is a string instrument of the violin family. It is larger than a violin but smaller than a cello, and like the violin and cello it is played with a bow.
A Violin, Cello, Stand up Bass, and a Cellin. ( by the way a cellin is a little bigger than a viola and it has a C string and a E string along with the D, G, and A strings.
