While people frequently ask and discuss box office totals, that is the wrong question. The real question is how many tickets are sold each year. When discussing dollars, inflation skews the numbers.
I think tickets sold will trend downward. For one the window between cinema and DVD release is shrinking. Also, other activities such as internet, game systems, and Netflix compete against cinemas strongly.
Of course, that doesn't mean that cinema's will stop being profitable. The "right film" still draws large numbers of attendees.
At times decreased...but films like "The Dark Knight", or "The Hangover", regain the popularity of the cinema.

On Historical aspects: Bangldesh Cinema hall (movie theaters) are dying. In 1990-91 the number of cinema halls were around 1230. But in 2010 the number has decreased to 742. Out of 44 cinema halls in Dhaka 33 are surviving. Huge building were erected in their place. Big names like, Gulistan, Shyamoli, Naz, Lion, Star, Shabistan, Tajmahal cinema etc. went into oblivion.
