What day is Christmas in Germany?
December 25th, same as every other nation that celebrates it. The only difference, and it varies again by region, but in the weeks leading up to Christmas, different things go on. In the town where I was stationed with the US Army, Schwabisch Gmund, Father Christmas chased three evil spirits through town driving them away from the good children. People dressed up as the characters and performed this play throughout the whole town. Mobs of kids follwed the Father Christmas, helping him to drive out the spirits. I got to experience Chirstkinder Markt in Nuremburg as well. The smell of cinnamon roasted almonds sends me right back still, twenty years later. I loved Christmas in Germany.
