People have not fought in the coliseum in Rome in centuries. Although the coliseum is in ruins, tourists still view the remains.
Just about any museum in Rome, Italy will offer pictures of the ancient coliseum. This does not come as much surprise though, as the coliseum used to be there. It still is, but it is not anywhere near the shape that it used to be in.

-- Coliseum ['kɒlə'sɪəm] Because 'Coliseum' is an invented word, there is no alteration to the pronunciation. It is similar with names - Coliseum is the name of something specific and so, Italians refer to it simply as 'Coliseum.' It would be the same with, say, the name of a person. John Smith. They would still call him John Smith, even though that is an English name, because names do not change.
they used it for basically anything
It is a museum
For the most part public entertainment, the coliseum* was also used to represent the wealth and intelligence of Rome.
