In the Christian book of Revelations there is an elaborate description of an evil beast that dominates the world. Apparently the numerological value of the name of this beast is 666. The actual number of the beast, correctly translated from the original Book of Revelations text, is 616, not 666.

666 was written in The Bible book of Revelations. Most Bible scholars believe that 666 refers to the Roman Emperor Nero. Nero perpetuated many brutal attacks against early Christians. The writer was trying to disguise that he was writing about Nero, and coded his name into 666.

∙ 8y agoSome scholars believe that 666 uses the Hebrew code system of gematria to criticise a roman emperor or some other enemy without the authorities knowing. However, some early Greek manuscripts give the number of the beast as 616. Either way, if it was a form of politically inspired code, it can't really be called the "devil's number".

∙ 12y agoNo. The scripture never directly relates this number to the devil. In Revelation it is the number of a man called the beast who comes out of the Earth. An evil man.
