He did not. On June 21st 1869 Monet was desperately poor and could not support his fiancee and their son. He jumped into the river Seine, but being a good swimmer he could not let himself drown. So he got out of the water and went on living for another 57 years.
Paintings with contemporary settings were rejected, as judges had strong ideas about recreating history. A painting that included some nudity was entered in a contest, and rejected. Nudity in paintings was normally accepted owing to the talent put in, but that particular painting (The Luncheon on the Grass) by the artist Édouard Manet - which depicted a nude woman with two clothed men at a picnic - was rejected due to the contemporary background. Many sympathized with Manet at the judge's sharp rejection of his painting, and another unusual majority of paintings set off rebellion among several French artists. Manet was admired by the first four impressionists, Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Bazille. It was later decreed by the Emperor Napolean III that the public should be allowed to judge the work themselves, organizing a Salon des Refusés (Salon of the refused). This new salon attracted more visitors than the original, though most were just there for a laugh. This helped boost the rebellious spirits of the four considered the "purest 'impressionists'" -- Monet, Sisley, Bazille and Pissarro.

There is not room enough for a list of several hundred (if not thousands) of famous painters. You had better go to the library and ask for an Art History book. The index will give you more names than you could ever want. And you will see some of their works.

Claude Monet was a founder and central figure of the 19th century art movement known as Impressionism. Early in his career, Monet painted realistic landscapes, but after the 1870s he focused more on the effect of changing light on everyday objects. Often he painted multiple studies of the same subjects, from train stations and haystacks to the London skyline, the Rouen Cathedral and, most famously, water lilies - (Monet's Impressionistic paintings sold well and his financial success allowed him to purchase property in Giverny, where he built a large garden that became the subject of his seriesWater Lilies (1906-26). Monet's scenes have since become some of the most recognized paintings in the world. One of his lily paintings sold in 1998 for around $39 million)Claude Monet is known for landscape paintings. His other common themes include water lilies, his garden and his wife, Camille.
