Hi, it is part of the injection timing system, it sends a signal to the ecu to help it work out the firing point of the injection pump. Another sensor works off a trigger on the flywheel.

99.999% of injected petrol cars are computer controlled injection. diesel is a different story though. they used to be mechanical but some more newer models are moving to computer controlled
