Yes, they certainly are - they have been known to weigh as much as 40kg. It is thought that penguin body size is directly related to habitat - larger species (such as Emperors, Adelies, Kings and Gentoos) are found on the Antarctic continent and sub-Antarctic islands. This is due to the fact that larger bodies are more able to withstand extreme cold temperatures.
