Following the ileum of the small intestine is the ileocecal valve, which separates the small intestine from the large intestine. The duodenum is separated from the stomach by the pyloric sphincter.

The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine and it is about 20 feet from the beginning of the large intestine.
The cecum is located in the first part of the large intestine. This serves as a connection between the ileum to the ascending colon and a part of the intestine that moves the waste to be excreted.
