It's extremely explosive and is also dangerous to breath. The sulfuric acid in the battery will be trapped in the fumes as droplets. This is very hazardous to your health. It is also known as Hydrogen Sulfate.

An auto battery does emit hydrogen gas when it is being charged or discharged but it does not contain gas per se.

What is gas discharged when a battery is charged?

Outgas produced while Charging or Discharging an Automotive BatteryThe gas produced by a lead-acid automotive battery is Hydrogen [H2]. Under unusual circumstances, sometimes there also may be some Hydrogensulphide [H2S] gas.

Is the gas given off by a battery being charged nonflammable?

Answer 1 - Out-gassing of Auto BatteriesNO, the out-gassing from auto batteries while being charged, AND while being DISCHARGED is HYDROGEN [H2] which is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, AND when mixed in the proper proportion [ratio] with air that Hydrogen gas is EXPLOSIVE.

The gas given off by a battery being charged is what?

Hydrogen

When a battery is being charged it produces oxygen and what other gas?

Are the vapors emitted from a car battery explosive?

Vehicular Battery Off-gassesYes, when a lead-acid battery is either charged or discharged it emits gasses [vapors]. Although there could be others, the primary gas is Hydrogen [H2], and sometimes Hydrogen Sulphide [H2S].If and when mixed in the proper ratio with the air, both of these gasses are highly explosive!!!!!

Is the gas given off a car battery harmful?

Battery Out-gassing Yes, vehicle batteries are usually of the lead-acid type, and these batteries give off hydrogen gas while they are either being discharged, or charged. Hydrogen gas is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas, is highly flammable and when mixed in proper proportion with oxygen in the air, hydrogen can be explosive. Smoking or any arc/spark within the hydrogen-oxygen gas envelope, or an internal spark inside the battery, can cause a massive explosion throwing sulphuric acid and disintegrated battery case plastic for some distance. This explosion of the battery out-gas can do very serious bodily harm, and has been reported to have resulted in deaths. Therefore, it is critical that all possible safety precautions are followed when working with, on, or around vehicular batteries. Most modern auto batteries have decals on them listing the major hazards and recommended precautions.

Why do filing caps of car batteries have holes in them?

to vent the Hydrogen gas that is produced when the battery is being charged.

What causes car battery out gassing?

When lead/ acid batteries are charged, they can give off hydrogen gas.
