As both driveshafts will need to be removed, the best advise I can offer is to buy a Haynes manual and follow the comprehensive instructions in that.
When making changes to anything electrical it is good to have a diagram to ensure everything is done correctly. A person can find a diagram for a Peugeot 309 Diesel in the owners manual or maintenance manual.

According to my manual, the fuel light goes on when the tank is down to approx 6 litres of diesel.

The Boxer Drivers Manual states 5.3 litres (page 151) BUT you will be lucky to get 2 litres in once you have drained it right down.
