The keeping of slaves is not democratic. A democracy only truly exists when everyone in the country has the possibility to become a citizen and thus vote. By having slaves the best a country could become is either an Aristocracy or an Oligarchy.

Because, some years ago, a majority of people decided that keeping slaves - of any color - was an immoral and distasteful idea. So we stopped doing it, declared that it was illegal, and freed all slaves.
