A killdeer eats by locating prey, visually, and pecking or grabbing it from the ground or in mid-air. They will often run, then stop and peck at insects crawling or flying near the ground or around decaying plants. Sometimes, they will put a foot out in front of them and shake it or pat it on the ground quickly. This is thought to stir up or dislodge insects nearby.
