Mining is the source of all metals, minerals, and much of the energy used in the world. The period prior to mining was known as the Stone Age. In short, other than things grown by people, someone had to dig things out of the earth. For example, I notice that you are using a computer. Ever consider how many different parts of your computer came from mining? Almost all of them. Along with much of the house you are in, the car you ride in, and the road you drive on. Much of the electricity powering your computer also came from mining. Unless you are a caveman squatting next to a fire, mining is pretty much as part of your everyday life.
