The closer to the maximum range you drive, the better the value for your dollar. I would suggest a electric car calculator. You can compare two separate cares, one being electric, and it will tell you at what point your electric car begins to pay off the difference in price. I will say this, I am spending a truly ridiculously small amount of money to commute. That being said, if you only drive 5 miles to work then.... not so much for you.
