A gadget should be uncommon. If everyone has it, it is not a gadget. So for example, there is a product called Aerogarden which allows one to grow herbs and vegetables indoor all year round regardless of external weather. It is a gadget, as most people don't have it (yet). However, when it reaches the point where just about everyone has it, it ceases to be a gadget and becomes an equipment. A gadget now can become an equipment in the future. Things like TV, fridge etc all used to be gadgets but now are equipments (or appliances).
