Consider that it is not at all biased, but that many Christians have been so accustomed to an overt bias towards Christianity in the media that, when the same news media begin to be more even-handed, it simply seems like bias.

Opinion

The media seems to be led by an oligarchy which is anti-Christian, anti-American, and left-winged. Because of laws, wealth, influence, and political savvy, the left-wing media pretty much has a monopoly on public thought. They work to ensure that those who don't think like them never have a chance at careers within the media. To insure their reign and bias, they are also attempting to get a monopoly over the Web. They want to restrict bloggers too. The media left is going out of the way to destroy any balance and dissent to their views, so that is a big part of why there is such bias. Without any real balance anymore, only those with anti-Christian bias are allowed a voice. If you have another view, they will shout you down, shut you down, take you off the air, attack your funds, or label you as a hate group.

The media bias against Christians is only part of a more pervasive agenda which affects all areas of life including orientation and race. The media was never biased towards Christians as biased revisionists allege. The media should treat allreligions, ethnic groups, lifestyles, and belief systems equally. For instance, the media usually reports racist crimes more in one direction, despite the other way around being more common. They amplify what racist things they do report way out of proportion. In several notable incidents, members of the media were guilty of creating evidence of racism, religious bigotry, and homophobia that did not exist.

Anti-Christian bias is real and all you have to do to see it is go to the Southern Poverty Law Center and look at those labeled as hate groups. Not only do they include real hate groups which commit actual violence and operate as gangs, they also include nearly every Christian, pro-family group. Groups like Westboro Baptist and the Christian Identity Movement belong on there, not Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, Public Advocate, and so on (which they also include).

OpinionI think the answer needs to start with some definitions. First, what is meant by "Christian"? If you include all self-identifying Christians, there is little evidence of media bias. However, if by "Christian" you are referring to "evangelical conservative Protestant Christianity", there is reasonable evidence of bias - Fox News tends to be biased for this subset of Christianity while MSNBC tends to be biased against this subset of Christianity. Second, what is meant by "news media"? Again, there is a wide range of options, from the entire conglomerate of newspapers, magazines, television, radios and cable broadcasts to a specific subgroup. Some of the subgroups tend to be biased towards Christianity while other subgroups tend to be biased against Christianity.

As far as why some portions of the news media tends to be biased against evangelical conservative Protestant Christianity, the base reason is their target audience disagrees with the tenets of evangelical conservative Protestant Christianity. Morally, this is equivalent to other portions of the news media tending to be biased against homosexuality, religious tolerance or a particular ethnic group - it distorts the issues and frames current events against a backdrop that makes it difficult for the typical viewer to perceive the subtle shading and bias that is present.
