Why is there no life on Mars?

We don't know that there is no life on Mars. We have seen no sign of it yet, but many scientists are still optimistic.

If there is no life on Mars, it would probably be because of the scarcity of water, the thinness of the atmosphere, and the coldness of the climate.

About four billion years ago, Mars was a warm wet planet, with a thick atmosphere protecting it and liquid water rivers, flowing into shallow seas.

Scientists believe even microbiological life might have been present.

Today the planet has dried up, has a thin atmosphere and has become freezing cold. If any bacteria would still be up there, they would be living deep inside the soil. (That's why the Mars rover is looking for fossils in the soil.)

Mars atmosphere mainly consisted out of CO2, which is a greenhouse gas, much like we have here on Earth, keeping the planet warm. But for some reason, scientists still don't know why, Mars has lost its protecting atmosphere which prevented the water from freezing or boiling away (a planet with no atmosphere has extreme conditions, as well as cold as extremely warm).

Pitched theories which might have caused the atmosphere of Mars to vanish:

• The CO2 got absorbed by the surface of the planet;
• The atmosphere has been blown away by an apocalyptic meteor impact;
• The atmosphere was vulnerable because of a lack of a decent magnetic field, which protects the atmosphere from solar winds;

The most popular theory today:

Mars lost his magnetic field about 4 billion years ago, when is core cooled off, by which the atmosphere became unprotected from solar winds. Over million of years solar winds stripped of the outer layer of the Mars atmosphere by which the atmospheric pressure lowered and the atmosphere could be blow away into space by wind.
