He says he isn't. But he did serve in Hitler's Luftwaffe (air force) as a member of a flak battery for the last part of the war. (German anti-aircraft artillery units were part of the air force). The Luftwaffe was the "most Nazi" of all the German service branches, owing its very existence to Hitler. A German air force had been forbidden under the Versailles Treaty, which Hitler ignored when he restarted the air force in 1935. To be fair, the man who is now Pope had little choice. No one claims he volunteered. The Germans were forcing everybody into their military, even very young and very old men. He was only in his middle teens. Still, its unfortunate, isn't it, that of all the fine Catholics out there, the Church turned to one of the last living members of the Nazi military.

The Pope was forcibly put in the Nazi military, he was a victim of the times. He has spent his life doing Gods work. The unfortunate thing here is that he was forced into joining the Nazi's, not that he was chosen to be Pope. His good works surely make up for his early years. He should be seen as a victim since obviously the Nazi beliefs go against everything he stands for.
