The equator is a member of a set of imaginary lines formed by the intersection of a plane normal to the rotation poles of the planet and the planet's surface. These are generically called lines of latitude and the equator is unique in this set of lines in that it is the longest of these lines (the largest circle) and divides the planet into two equal hemispheres.
